Austin, Texas offers plenty of waterways, warm water and a exceptional stand up paddle board (SUP) community. The most popular spot is Lady Bird Lake (aka Town Lake) located directly in town. You can find miles of paddling on perfect water due to the fact that no motorized boats are allowed on the lake. This makes for the perfect spot to enjoy a paddle and enjoy your surroundings.
If you make your way into the Lower Barton Springs, you will find crystal clear spring water that flows directly from the famous Barton Springs Pool. This paddle, best enjoyed at high noon, can feel like paddling in an aquarium with turtles, perch, bass, carp and other wildlife beneath you in the cool, translucent waters.
Red Bud Isle
Now we get to Red Bud Isle, a spot that is well worth checking out for Stand Up Paddlers. Located where Lake Austin ends and Lady Bird Lake begins. Red Bud Isle is a great place to explore with a one mile loop that has plenty of luscious cliffs. If you get lucky at this spot and the damn is open, you could have the opportunity to catch some small free standing waves. Use caution if you are not an experienced stand up paddler as the current can be strong.
